- Description
- Live In Caretaker/Security person required for a large estate. The Estate is situated between Reading and Newbury and covers some 5600 ha in Berkshire and Hampshire, including 1,400ha of woodland. The role is to always ensure the security of the family home, assist with the smooth running, and general appearance of the house, carrying out general maintenance duties and keeping the building and surrounding areas to agreed presentation standards. To support the Head Housekeeper in all tasks, to observe safe working practices in carrying out the required duties and ensure that instructions specified by technical consultants, contractors and manufacturers are adhered to. Support family and commercial events and be responsible for some of the cleaning of the event areas.
Main duties- To prepare the House on a daily basis which includes turning off the intruder alarm, opening curtains and shutters (as required) and checking the condition, tidiness of rooms, hallways and stairs and preparing fires in winter months.
- To close the House at the end of each day, ensuring curtains drawn/windows, shutters and doors are secured and setting the intruder alarm.
- To carry out tasks such as daily newspaper collection, cleaning of shoes and shopping as required.
- To dispose of waste materials in a safe, hygienic manner ensuring that it is available for collection as required.
- To share the care of the family dogs, including walking, feeding and washing.
- To clean the family car(s), conduct routine checks inc tyre pressures, oil / water levels and ensure they are MOT’d, insured, serviced and taxed.
- To provide support for the Head Housekeeper as required, working in the kitchen/ pantry and also providing ‘front of house’ service for family and guests.
- To monitor stock levels of consumable items such as fuel, grit, light bulbs, fire logs etc and arrange to replenish supplies in accordance with current procedures.
- To be responsible for carrying out all system checks / tests on the Intruder and Fire Alarm systems and reporting any faults to the respective service and maintenance company, recording details and actions.
- To take responsibility for security of the house and act as the main Key Holders/ First Responder in the event of an Intruder Alarm activation and liaise with the family, other Estate personnel and police should an incident occur.
- To take responsibility for the safety of the premises and again act as the main Key Holders/ First Responder in the event of a Fire Alarm activation and liaise with the family, other Estate personnel and Fire and Rescue Se
- To ensure heating plant and equipment is efficiently and effectively operated, make adjustments as necessary and reports defects and malfunctions to the Estate Maintenance Manager.
- To take responsibility for managing all household systems and equipment and carry out basic maintenance. Arrange to clear blockages, remove foreign matter from sinks, toilets, drains, kitchen grease traps etc. and clean up spillages as required. For more complex issues to report to the Estate Maintenance Manager to ensure appropriate remedial action is taken to rectify any faults.
- To report any suspicious activities, ensuring that gates, doors and windows of the premises are secure and each evening set the Intruder Alarm.
- To maintain the wine cellar including stock management and rotation.
- To drive family members from time to time using family / Estate vehicles.
- To act as point of contact for visitors or contractors arriving at the premises and take collection of post and other deliveries as required (ensuring they are passed on the addressee).
- Answer the telephone, taking and passing on messages promptly.
- To work closely and cooperatively with all work colleagues both within the House and on the Estate and always demonstrate a flexible, positive and supportive attitude, displaying a team ethos at all times.
- To perform an active role within the event operations, setting up tables and chairs plus the installation of other equipment.
Full and clean UK driving licence required
Proficient IT skills in Microsoft Office, Outlook and other programs.
Basic DIY skills
Emergency First Aid at Work Training – not essential to start but would need a willingness to complete asap.
Working Days/Hours: The hours and days of work may vary depending on the needs of the family but will normally be 40 hours per week plus additional hours as required to fulfil the duties. The day will be split to open the house in the morning, time off in the afternoon, and an hour to lock up in the evening. Due to the flexible nature of the role, the hours required to work will not always be spread evenly across each week and will be subject to change to meet operational requirements. Your regular working hours each week are to be finalised with the Head Housekeeper although it should be pointed out that your days off will generally be mid-week (with occasional weekends off) and the post will also include the need to work some evenings, bank holidays and nights.
Accommodation: Very large one bedroom flat within the house. Parking available. Partner and one small well behaved dog considered.
